Using Your Free E-Mail Spam Rejection Software (SpamAssassin)
SpamAssassin is a unique e-mail spam detector that automatically places suspicious
looking spam directly into your e-mail programs 'Spam' folder. This protocol allows
you the chance to inspect the spam before deleting it. SpamAssassin is a program
that lies directly on CogniLogic's servers; therefore, there is no need to install
any software on your personal computer.
Requirements
SpamAssassin works directly through CogniLogic's WebMail features; therefore,
you must have WebMail enabled to take advantage of SpamAssassin. Since SpamAssassin
detects spam before it hits your Inbox, there are no compatibility problems with
your existing e-mail programs.
White Lists & Black Lists
SpamAssassin differentiates spam by either a White List, or Black List. White
Lists are characterized by those e-mail addresses you will allow SpamAssassin
to place directly into your e-mail Inbox despite the default detection settings
already installed within SpamAssassin. Black Lists are characterized by those
e-mail addresses, or domain names that were not detected by SpamAssassin; however,
should be interpreted as spam.
Customizing White & Black Lists
If SpamAssassin is active for a particular WebMail account, and you wish to
create a White, or Black List, you have two ways to do so. The first is the simplest.
Just send CogniLogic a request asking us to add, delete, or modify a White/Black
List. Click
here to do so. Your request will be handled within 24-48 hours.
Setting Up Rules for Handling Spam
When SpamAssassin detects an e-mail as spam it will place the e-mail inside
your WebMail 'Spam' folder, which you can view in the WebMail interface. It does
not delete the potential spam e-mail. You must manage this yourself. It doesn't
delete it because detection is not always accurate and what SpamAssassin 'thinks'
is spam may actually be a message you want to receive, such as if you signed up
for an e-mail newletter. If you believe an e-mail to not be spam, then you must
create a White List to override the spam detection
and deliver future e-mails directly into your Inbox.
Please note that any spam delivered to the Spam folder in your WebMail interface
will not be downloaded to your computer if you are utilizing your own e-mail software
unless you are using an IMAP account at which it will synchronize. To set up an
IMAP account in your e-mail software, click
here.
Managing Your Spam
Spam does take up space, no doubt about it. It is up to you to manage your
spam folder on your WebMail account. We suggest checking the folder depending
on the amount of spam you receive. If you receive a lot of spam, check it once
a week and delete the spam. Otherwise every few weeks should be good enough. Keep
in mind that the amount of space your spam takes does count towards your WebMail
accounts allocated space for your web hosting plan. Therefore, keep an eye on
it.
If your spam becomes to much of a hinderence, you may want to explore alternatives
to your spam controls. Here are a few other options:
Automatically Delete Spam: Upon your request we can delete
the spam automatically, but it is not recommended, because you will not be able
to see any potential faulty spam messages. There is no recovery for automatically
deleting spam before it arrives into your account.
Configure Your E-Mail Program to Control Spam: Most e-mail
programs allow you to create some sort of "Rule" that can be applied
to incoming messages. In this case, upon your request, we can set up your spam
to be sent to your Inbox whereby it will be tagged with "[Spam]" in
the subject line. You can tell your e-mail program to detect any e-mail with [Spam]
in the subject line to go to a particular folder, or simply go into the Trash.
You will have to consult your personal e-mail program's help menu for configuration.
CogniLogic is unable to provide support for this feature.
Send Spam to the Trash: We can send spam to your Trash folder
in your WebMail account rather than the "Spam" folder. This will eliminate
the need to move your spam from the Spam folder and into the trash, saving you
an extra step.
For any of the above options you must send
us a request asking us what you'd like to do.
