Configuring Your E-Mail Account Settings for POP3/IMAP Protocol.
We have listed the most popular e-mail management programs on the market today
below so you can set up your e-mail account without any hassle for either a POP3,
or IMAP account.
The POP3 protocol allows you to enable multiple subfolders within your
e-mail program's Inbox. IMAP does not. In POP3, you will only be able to view
your folders and subfolders on your local computer, not within the WebMail interface.
They simply wait in your Inbox for you to download them through Outlook.
This protocol is advantageous if you do not travel very often and prefer to only
use your personal e-mail program outside of WebMail.
The IMAP Advantage
IMAP allows your system to automatically update the web server with your folders
and e-mails. By this we mean that if you have a folder that you like to store
e-mail messages in called "my keepsakes", then whenever you check e-mail
the server will automatically place the "my keepsakes" folder and all
its contents on the web server, enabling you to view these folders at the WebMail
interface. This allows you to always have a copy of your messages on your personal
computer and one on the server. POP3 does not allow automatic updating.
If you have multiple subfolders, with an IMAP protocol, the subfolders will NOT
be written to the server, only the highest level in the hiearchy.
IMAP protocol is advantageous if you travel a lot and do not have access to your
local machine very often and wish to do most of your e-mail through the WebMail
interface.
